Formicarium with Foraging Arena

Discover the fascinating world of ants from the comfort of your home with the Terra S. This compact formicarium combines natural-style underground chambers, a dedicated foraging arena, reliable hydration, and an expandable modular design to create a practical habitat for a wide variety of ant species. Designed for both new and experienced ant keepers, the Terra S makes it easy to observe how a real ant colony organizes, feeds, communicates, raises brood, and develops over time.

🐜 Natural-Style Underground Ant Nest

The Terra S recreates the interconnected chambers and tunnels found inside natural ant nests. Its clay and sand-based substrate provides a textured nesting environment suitable for a broad range of species. The natural-style surface also provides suitable footing for larvae when spinning cocoons, making the nest particularly useful for species that pupate inside cocoons. Different species will use the chambers in fascinating ways. Seed-harvesting ants may designate chambers for storing seeds, while other species may establish dedicated brood chambers for eggs, larvae, and pupae.

👀 Watch Your Colony Develop

The transparent viewing surface provides an excellent opportunity to observe what normally happens hidden beneath the ground. Depending on the species and colony size, you may be able to watch your ants:

• Care for eggs, larvae, and pupae
• Move brood between chambers
• Store seeds and food
• Groom one another
• Communicate and recruit workers
• Organize different areas of their nest
• Explore and forage for food
• Expand their colony over time

The included red acrylic magnetic cover keeps the underground chambers shaded during everyday use.
When you want to observe your colony, simply remove the cover for a clear view inside.

🌿 Dedicated Foraging Arena

The integrated foraging area (outworld) gives worker ants a dedicated above-ground space to explore and search for food. Food can be placed inside the arena instead of directly inside the nesting chambers, making routine feeding and maintenance easier. The arena also provides an excellent viewing area for observing natural behaviors such as scouting, food recruitment, communication, and cooperative feeding.

💧 Large 20 mL Water Reservoir

Maintaining suitable nest moisture is an important part of successful ant keeping. The Terra S features a large 20 mL water reservoir designed to provide consistent moisture to the nesting area. Its larger capacity is particularly useful for moisture-loving species and colonies kept in warmer environments where hydration may be consumed more quickly.

A blunt-tip syringe is included for convenient reservoir refilling.

🔗 Expandable Modular Design

A successful ant colony will eventually need more space, and the Terra S is designed with future growth in mind. The nest includes two 10 mm expansion ports, allowing compatible nests, arenas, and other ant-keeping modules to be connected using plastic tubing. Instead of relocating an established colony into an entirely new setup, additional space can be introduced as the colony grows. Connection stoppers are included, allowing unused ports to remain securely closed until they are needed.

🐜 Suitable for a Wide Range of Ant Species

The Terra S is designed to accommodate many commonly kept ant species, from smaller garden ants to larger and more exotic species.

Suitable species may include:

• Lasius species
• Messor species
• Harvester ants
• Carpenter ants
• Many medium-sized ant species
• Larger exotic species such as venator

The ideal nest size, temperature, and humidity requirements will vary depending on the species and colony size.

🔬 Educational & Fascinating to Observe

An established ant colony offers a window into an incredibly organized miniature society. The Terra S can be used to observe concepts related to ant biology, entomology, colony organization, communication, social insects, brood development, and foraging behavior.

This makes it an interesting habitat for:

• Home ant keeping
• Beginner ant keepers
• Experienced hobbyists
• Classroom observation
• Biology activities
• STEM learning
• Insect enthusiasts
• Educational demonstrations
