Species Info:
- General:
Formica serviformica, often referred to as the “slave-making ant assistant” or “small black ant,” is a widespread species found across Europe and parts of Western Asia. They are slender ants with a brown to dark brown coloration, sometimes with a slightly reddish tint on the thorax. Workers are agile, fast-moving, and demonstrate a keen awareness of their environment. While they are not aggressive toward humans, they are capable defenders when disturbed. Formica serviformica is a fantastic choice for hobbyists who appreciate active foraging behavior and a hardy nature. They are also known to sometimes act as hosts for temporary social parasites like Formica rufibarbis or Formica sanguinea in the wild, adding an interesting dimension to their biology.
- Diet:
Formica serviformica is highly omnivorous. They eagerly consume liquid sugars like honey water, sugar water, and syrup solutions. For optimal brood development, they require regular protein feedings—small insects such as fruit flies, mealworms, crickets, and roaches are excellent choices. A varied diet improves colony health and can significantly accelerate growth, especially during the early stages of colony establishment.
- Temperature:
This species is remarkably tolerant of fluctuating temperatures but thrives best when maintained between 72–82°F (22–28°C). Supplemental heating can improve brood development rates, but Formica serviformica can successfully live at average room temperatures in most homes. Heating mats or cables can be strategically used under only part of the setup to allow for thermoregulation.
- Diapause:
A winter diapause period is essential for Formica serviformica’s long-term health. Colonies should be cooled to around 39–45°F (4–7°C) for approximately 3-4 months. Methods such as using a wine fridge, a basement, or another cool area are ideal. Cooling should be gradual to replicate natural seasonal transitions, which helps to ensure successful overwintering and robust spring activity.
- Growth:
From egg to adult worker, the development period generally spans 6–8 weeks, influenced by diet quality and ambient temperature. In their first year, colonies typically stay small, averaging 30–70 workers, but with attentive care, they can steadily reach several hundred workers over subsequent years. Formica serviformica queens are notably durable and can live up to 10–12 years under optimal conditions, making them a rewarding long-term project for dedicated ant keepers.
