Plagiolepis pygmaea is one of the smallest European ants (workers are 1.5 mm long, and females are about 4 mm). In the wild, they inhabit mountain or steppe landscapes, where they make do with such limited food resources that even super-hardy harvesters would not survive for long!

At home, a large family of plagiolepis can occupy just one test tube. And our XL formicarium will be enough for them for their entire life! This species is undemanding in care: it tolerates both low humidity and a wide variety of food. In addition, baby plagiolepis can store excess liquid food in themselves.

Plagiolepis pygmaea are distinguished by their developed communication skills: they can transmit important information not only by contact with their antennae, but also by knocking their abdomen on the ground and twitching their body.
