Description

Species Info:

General: Also known as the Winter Ant or False Honeypot Ant, Prenolepis imparis is a unique North American species adapted to cool-season activity. Unlike many ants, they are most active in late fall, winter, and early spring, while often becoming inactive during hot summer conditions. Workers are small, glossy, and range from amber-brown to dark brown. Queens are noticeably larger and can develop a swollen gaster when well-fed. Colonies may contain replete-style workers that store fat reserves, giving them their “false honeypot” reputation.

Diet: Omnivorous, with a strong preference for liquid sugars and small protein sources. Offer sugar water, honey water, or nectar regularly, along with soft-bodied insects such as fruit flies, small crickets, roach nymphs, or cut mealworms. They benefit from steady feeding but should not be over-heated to force faster growth.

Temperature: Prefers cooler conditions than most commonly kept ants. A range of 60-72°F is suitable for regular activity, with slightly warmer room temperatures up to around 75°F tolerated. Avoid prolonged high heat, as this species naturally retreats deep underground during hot summer periods and may aestivate.

Diapause: Does not follow a typical winter diapause like many temperate ants. Instead, Prenolepis imparis is naturally active during cooler months and may enter a summer dormancy, or aestivation, when temperatures are too warm. For captive care, keep them cool and stable rather than providing strong heat. A cooler rest period during the warmest part of the year can help match their natural cycle.

Growth: Generally slower and more seasonal than heat-loving species. Queens often found colonies steadily but may pause brood production depending on temperature and seasonal rhythm. Colonies can become sizable over time, but growth is usually not explosive. Stable cool temperatures, low stress, and consistent access to sugars and protein are key for success.
