Species Info:
- General: Also known as the European Fire Ant, Myrmica rubra is a hardy and aggressive species. Colonies are polygynous, meaning they can have multiple queens. Workers and queens are reddish-brown, with a slightly darker head and gaster. These ants are highly active and can be prolific when well-fed and heated.
- Diet: Omnivorous and opportunistic feeders. They require liquid sugars frequently and readily accept various proteins such as insects (mealworms, crickets) and cooked meats. Colony growth is strongly influenced by food availability.
- Temperature: Thrives in moderate warmth but doesn’t require excessive heat. A range of 75-82°F is ideal for optimal brood development.
- Diapause: Requires a 3-4 month diapause period at temperatures around 40°F. Can be achieved using a wine cooler, mini fridge, or an unheated area above freezing. Gradual cooling over a week is recommended.
- Growth: Brood development takes 5-7 weeks depending on heat and food availability. With multiple queens, colonies can grow rapidly, reaching thousands of workers within a few years.
