Formica subsericea is a common North American ant species known for its shiny black appearance and large colonies. These fast-moving, aggressive foragers thrive in open woodlands and urban areas, nesting in soil or under logs. Species Info:
- General: A fast-moving and highly adaptable species. Queens and workers are black with a silvery sheen. These ants are known for their speed and defensive spraying of formic acid.
- Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for liquid sugars and proteins such as crickets, mealworms, and other small insects. Regular feeding greatly influences colony growth.
- Temperature: While they can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, they grow best with additional heat, ideally between 75-85°F.
- Diapause: Requires a 3-4 month diapause at around 40°F. This can be achieved using a wine cooler, mini fridge, or an unheated but stable room. Gradual cooling before diapause is recommended.
- Growth: Brood development takes 5-7 weeks. Colonies can grow to hundreds of workers in the first year and several thousand over time with optimal conditions.
