Description

Species Info:

General: A cold-tolerant, high-altitude Formica species known for its remarkable adaptability and quick response to environmental changes. Queens are relatively slim compared to other Formica, and workers display the species’ distinctive reddish thorax. These ants are active and quick to defend their nests.

Diet: Omnivorous, favoring a mixture of sugars and proteins. They readily consume honey water, sugar syrup, and protein sources such as crickets, fruit flies, and mealworms. A rich diet accelerates development and promotes healthy colony growth.

Temperature: Best kept between 72–85°F for active growth, but they are very tolerant of cooler temperatures, especially during early spring and fall seasons.

Diapause: Essential for long-term health. Requires a 3-4 month diapause at approximately 40°F. This can be achieved using a wine cooler, refrigerator, or an unheated room with a stable temperature. Gradual cooling is advised to mimic natural seasonal transition.

Growth: Development from egg to worker takes roughly 6-8 weeks. Colonies can establish steadily with proper care and may reach several hundred workers within the first year. Over time, and under ideal conditions, they can develop into sizable, fast-moving colonies.
