Camponotus modoc is a large black ant with orangish-red legs native to Canada. Colonies grow slowly but can become quite large, developing major workers.

Species Info:
- General: Easy to keep in captivity, sugar-loving, slow-growing but rewarding. Colonies develop large major workers.
- Diet: Liquid sugars (honey, sugar water) & proteins (fruit flies, crickets, mealworms). Fruit flies are a favorite. Feed daily or every few days, depending on colony size.
- Temperature: Best kept around 82°F with a heat source (heat mat, cable, or heated room) for optimal growth.
- Diapause: Requires a 3-4 month cooling period (~40°F). Use a wine cooler, mini-fridge, or an unheated room above freezing.
- Growth: Brood develops in 5-9 weeks, with 7-8 weeks being average. Queens lay eggs in batches. Colonies grow slowly for the first 1-2 years but can reach the hundreds in 2-3 years.
