Species Info:
- General: A fast-growing and highly active species. Queens are black, while workers are black or occasionally black/brown. Their distinct heart-shaped gasters set them apart from other ants.
- Diet: Generalist feeders that thrive on liquid sugars and various proteins like crickets and mealworms. Growth rate depends heavily on food intake.
- Temperature: A heat source is crucial for long-term colony growth, with an optimal range of 80-85°F.
- Diapause: Requires a 1-2 month diapause, with temperatures around 40°F. This can be achieved using a wine cooler, mini fridge, or a safe non-heated room. Gradual cooling is recommended.
- Growth: Brood develops in 4-6 weeks (typically 5). With sufficient heat and food, colonies can reach hundreds of workers in the first year and thousands by the second.
