Description
General: Aphaenogaster picea is a medium-sized, active, and agile species. These ants are excellent foragers and do not have a social stomach, meaning they carry food back to the nest rather than sharing it mouth-to-mouth. Queens and workers are typically dark brown to black.
Diet: They are omnivorous but prefer insects and protein-rich foods like crickets, mealworms, and fruit flies. They also consume sugary foods like honey and fruit, but require solid food since they cannot store liquids internally.
Temperature: This species does well at room temperature but grows faster with heat around 75-82°F.
Diapause: Requires 3-4 months of diapause at around 40°F for long-term health. This can be achieved using a wine cooler, mini fridge, or a cool, non-freezing room. Gradual cooling is advised.
Growth: Brood development takes 5-7 weeks. Colonies grow steadily but are slower compared to other species. Mature colonies can reach a few thousand workers over several years.
